Hello!
Well I am trying hard to keep to my promise of blogging regularly. What, with 2 kids and a husband to look after, a growing business and some side charity work, I am not doing so bad returning here after a week to update, lol!
I thought I'd start with a little background. I promote wellness, and I too, am on a journey to wellness. I am a Well Woman Specialist Midwife. 'Well Woman', 'Well Woman Care' are phrases that I use frequently and many do not understand, so let me attempt to explain.
'Well Woman' is mainly used in the healthcare industry and denotes good health, wellness, etc. As a Well Woman Specialist Midwife, asides from my midwifery duties, I provide Well Woman Care which means health needs that women who are otherwise "well", seek. For example, Health Screening (cervical cancer screening aka pap smear test, breast examination, STI screening, etc..), Contraception aka Family Planning, Counselling and so on.
Many women at diffferent points in their lives, find themselves in need of the above services. They are not 'unwell' or sick, so they do not need to attend hospitals necessarily. Although hospitals may provide some of these services, the hospital environment is more suited to people who are in need of interventions for more serious health issues. Hence, the need for a service such as this, that focuses on preventive health - promotion of good health, prevention of illness and referrals to a higher level specialist service when the need arises.
Since relocating to Nigeria, I have come across many situations that could have been avoided if this sort of care was available and easily accesible to women. Countries such as GB, that boasts lower mortality rates, use this sort of model in their approach towards improving health (for both men and women).
I have high hopes for this idea and will continue to work hard to develop it.
I do hope this makes some sense to the reader.
